Love in a Cold Climate DVD Review

I have always been a sucker for a historical film. Make it a mini series and I know I am going to be hooked. That is exactly what happened with  Love in a Cold Climate. Once I started watching this additive series, I couldn't stop until I had watched all eight episodes back to back.  The combination of a powerful story line filled with historical facts and stunning costume design left me glued to my seat.  The cast gives a realistic performance that draws you in and leaves you wanting more. I laughed. I cried.  I wished it would never end. And I ordered the books by Nancy Mitford as soon as I finished watching the show. You can't go wrong with this series if you are looking for some historical romance to spice up your summer.

Propelled by a star-studded cast and a brilliant blend of period romance and social satire, akin to the works of Evelyn Waugh, Love in a Cold Climate makes its long-awaited North American DVD debut from Acorn Media on June 26, 2012. Based on bestselling author Nancy Mitford’s wickedly witty novels, Love in a Cold Climate stars Oscar® winner Judi Dench (Iris, Casino Royale, Shakespeare in Love) and Michael Williams (A Fine Romance) in this eight-part series set against a backdrop of the English nobility’s golden age—and a looming world war. Broadcast on Masterpiece Theatre in the 1980s, the series garnered acclaim from critics on both side of the Atlantic. Co-stars include Michael Aldridge (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), Vivian Pickles (Harold and Maude), and Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The DVD 3-disc set includes eight gripping episodes ($59.99, www.AcornOnline.com).

Linda Radlett (Lucy Gutteridge, A Christmas Carol), daughter of Lord and Lady Alconleigh, follows her heart in and out of adventures, marriages, and dalliances, much to the dismay of her parents. Her dear friend Polly Hampton (Rosalyn Landor, Rumpole of the Bailey) maintains a cooler head (and some say, a colder heart) in her romantic entanglements. In the midst of a looming war that will alter their lives forever, the series seamlessly weaves together the two women’s tangled love affairs.

Bestselling author Nancy Mitford’s novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, draw on her own experiences as a child of Britain’s aristocracy between the two world wars; the series is adapted by Simon Raven (The Pallisers, Edward & Mrs. Simpson).

Street Date: June 26, 2012               SRP: $59.99
DVD 3-Disc Set – 8 episodes - Approx. 405 min., – SDH subtitles

If you want to get the advantage of a full set of amazing love stories that will leave you on the breathless, than this is the box set for you. You can order Love in a Cold Climate for only $59.99 at Acorn Media.

Getting Fit with NutriSystem Week 20 #NSNation

Wow! Has it really been twenty weeks since I started the NutriSystem program? Twenty weeks sounds like a lot, and yet the time has just flown by! I have loved every minute of this journey.  Seeing the weight come off has been amazing.  When I visit friends who haven't seen me in a while, they always tell me how great I look, and it just makes me feel so good about my success. This weekend, my dad is visiting from South America, and I haven't seen in ten years.  Thanks to NutriSystem, I'm not embarressed to post pictures of us together on face book for the whole world to see.

After a few bumpy weeks, I feel that I am back on track with my weight loss. I am down to 134.4, which is exactly one pound less than last week. This brings my total weight loss to fourteen pounds since I started the program. Only nine more pounds, and I'll be back to my high school weight...and just in time to start planning our 20 year reunion. Shoot, did I just give away my age?

This week, I have been on the go a lot and trying to be good. So when my dad wanted to stop at Starbucks, I got a plain coffee and opened up one of my tasty NutriSystem desserts, which I've started to carry around to help with temptation. One of my favorites is the Carrot Cake. "Great news! Carrot cake, a dessert classic, is no longer off limits on a diet. This moist individual cake is absolutely brimming with carrots, the natural sweetness of pineapple, and the perfect blend of spices—all topped with a thin layer of sweet vanilla icing. Just one bite of this all-Am"

Agatha Christie's Poirot Series 5 on DVD

I have always been a fan of Agatha Christie. I have read many of her books, even though they would probably be considered "before my time". Most of the copies I have are yellowed with age, but a good story is timeless and Agatha Christie is a writer for all generations. But one thing I didn't know until recently is that Acorn has taken some of her characters and made them into their own television series.  Only the British could find a way to take a classic mystery novel and turn it into an equally entertaining series. And that is exactly what they've done with the Agatha Christie's Poirot. They have brought the Belgian Detective to life, right now to his classic mustache. And now you can get the DVDof  Series 5 of Poirot thanks to Acorn Media  starting June 26th. Here is a little information about the release.

Newly remastered and restored to their original U.K. broadcast order, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Series 5 debuts on Blu-ray and arrives on DVD from Acorn Media on June 26, 2012. David Suchet returns as Agatha Christie’s peerless Poirot in these eight mysteries from the hit series. The genteel Belgian detective calls upon his famous little grey cells to crack cases that no one else could, aided by cohorts Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser,Sharpe), Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson, Little Voice), and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran). Brimming with beguiling 1930s period details and pitch-perfect performances, these lavish adaptations look better than ever in this remastered edition. ITV Studios’ Poirot has aired on ITV1 in the U.K. since 1989 and on PBS and A&E in the U.S. Series 5 previously aired in 1993. The 2-disc Blu-ray and 2-disc DVD sets include all eight mysteries from Series 5, now with SDH subtitles ($49.99/$39.99, www.AcornOnline.com).

Series 5 guest stars include Anna Chancellor (BBC’s The Hour, Four Weddings and a Funeral), Hermione Norris (MI-5, Cold Feet), and Jeremy Northam (Emma, The Tudors).

THE MYSTERIES
The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb—An archaeological dig turns deadly.
The Underdog—Poirot’s and Hastings’s hobbies lead them to a murder scene.
Yellow Iris—Poirot is haunted by an heiress’s unsolved murder.
The Case of the Missing Will—A revised will goes missing after its author’s sudden death.
The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman—Poirot takes on a case involving an Italian count.
The Chocolate Box—Poirot investigates an old case on a trip home to Belgium.
Dead Man’s Mirror—Poirot wins a new client at an art auction.
Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan—A priceless necklace disappears while Poirot is on vacation.

In this series, the story of the renown  is told in a way that Agatha Christie would be proud off. If you want to take advantage a whole set of great mysteries, this is the series for you. You can order Poirot Series 4 on DVD for only $39.99 at Acorn Media starting 6/26/12. Series 1-4 are also available for various prices.

#Free This Weekend! Fairy Tail by Andrew P. Weston

This book has been on my reading list for a while, and I was excited to see that it was free for the weekend!!!! It was published by Ruby Lioness Press, which is the sister company of my publisher, Pagan Writers Press. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it looks like a quick, fun read! When I do get to it, I will be sure to post a review.

You can get your free copy of Fairy Tail on Amazon. Here is a little about the book to get you excited!

For the third year running, a ritualistic serial killer has struck again in the week leading up to Halloween, leaving a gruesome and bloody trail in his wake.

It’s the same every year. One murder every day, until his quotient of seven has been reached. Butchery doesn’t begin to describe what happens to those who he gets his hands on. Then the killer vanishes – only to return twelve months later as merciless as ever.

When he does resurface, he appears to strike randomly and at will. It cannot be established exactly how the killer selects his victims, or why. As such, the detective leading the case is no closer to discovering the identity of the ruthless predator than he was when the slayings began.
It’s only when the detective gets an unexpected break that things get interesting…

Our Thoughts

I wash my hands a lot. I have two kids in diapers, a dog and a cat to clean up after, and at least once a day I have to pick up something that is no longer identifiable.  If I'm going to wash my hands umpteen times a day, I want to use a soap that is gentle on my skin and leaves them smelling like I just came from the spa.  Because lets face it, my hand soap is the closest I'll be getting to a spa until my two little ones start school.  The Wash Your Hands of It Liquid hand soap was the perfect choice for me. It smells lovely, lathers nicely, and gives me a few seconds of much needed indulgence. As you can imagine, washing your hands so many times a day can leave them dry and cracked. Luckily, this adorable set also comes with a companion hand lotion that smells just as nice and leaves your skin feeling soft and healthy. I don't usually have time to go looking for lotions, so having the two bottles together in the fashionable silver tone caddy is not only convenient, it also adds it a little dash of style to any bathroom.
